I've had a version of this model for about 18 months now and brewed over 2000 espresso drinks (you can know this because the computer chip actually records the total number of uses).  In general, it's a great machine but not without some quirks.  The dual-element heating is a wonderful step up if you make capuccinos or lattes and have hated the wait while the element changes from brewing temperature to frothing temp.  Coffee is consistently well-brewed with good crema and rich flavor indicating that pump pressure is well-regulated.  Now for some of the issues: most American espresso and french roast coffee beens are simply too oily and clog up in the grinder.  The machine only works well with European-type lighter roasted espresso beans, such as are available from Hufford or Capresso directly.  And then there is the frother device that comes flying off the steam nozzle, spewing milk all over the place.  This tends to happen after time, when the o-ring or rubber seal has weakened or stretched a bit and no longer retains its hold under pressure.  Capresso has not yet come up with a fix for this, except to send out a new frother part every few months.  On balance, though, this is a great machine for serious coffee lovers.  Plus it looks cool.

Superb! November 25, 2009

After much research, we purchased this machine as certified pre-brewed. We knew we wanted a Jura, and our budget only went so far. Instead of a new lower end machine we spent our allotted amount on a CPB S7 avantgarde. It arrived in only 48 hours, with Saturday delivery.

We wanted a machine with Xpress froth, and the double boiler so we wouldn't have to wait between frothing and brewing or vice versa. The menu display and buttons are very clear and intuitive, the machine is easy to clean, and best of all, whether it's crema coffee or espresso, all have come out wonderfullly. We are picky about our coffee drinks and this machine has been flawless in executing them.

As for being factory reconditioned, the machine was either hardly used or wonderfully refurbished, because it has not a scratch on it and in every detail appreared to be brand new. The included DVD is very clear.

Five stars for the S7a and for the customer service at JL Hufford.

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE November 25, 2009

I would NOT recommend ordering from this company.  After placing an order for well over $2000 of merchandise which was supposed to include three free gifts.  JL Hufford decided NOT to honor their free gift offer.  I received the coffee maker without the gifts.  When I sent an email complaining to the customer service department, I got a poor excuse, with no merchandise ever being sent.  

Pretty bad way to treat a customer who spends $2000, to withhold $60 of "free" gifts which probably cost them less than $20.

JL Hufford Reply:  Customer requested a Price Match to a competitor's site and received their price + 5% of the difference. They were not offering free gifts and per Plus 5% Price Match Policy, we price match to exact package the competitor offers.  The customer chose the cash discount instead of the $60 value in free gifts.
