Technivorm Moccamaster CDGT Thermal Coffee Brewer - Polished Silver - 9505

Product Code: TECHNIVORM-CDGT-COFFEE-BREWER

Brewing between the optimal 198 and 205°F, the Technivorm Moccamaster CDGT Coffee Brewer features a sturdy cylindrical aluminum body with a powerful copper heating element. This ensures water is heated correctly and passed over grounds at an accurate pace for the best extraction possible. Included are two lids: the brew-thru lid to instantly promote a uniform pot of coffee, and a travel lid for sealing and serving. Safety features include a Dual Safety Shut-Off, so when either the water tank is empty or the thermal carafe is not in the brewing position, the heating element is shut off. An Auto Drip Stop is present for those who want a cup before the brew cycle is complete. Endorsed by the SCAA, each Technivorm CDGT is hand made and tested in Amerongen, Netherlands under quality standards which lead the industry, which is the reason it includes a Five year warranty. Brews 10 European cups (40 oz).

  • Q: Will I see value for the $299 I spend on a Technivorm CDGT Moccamaster?
A: Good question, and the answer is yes! Most coffee makers, even some costing over $200, use inferior heating elements that begin brewing with water that is too cold, finish by hitting the ground coffee with steam (never a good thing), and take far too long to brew a full pot (8 to 12 minutes). While those designs tend to produce overly bitter coffee, the Technivorm delivers rich, aromatic coffee that emits the flavor profile promised by the roaster. It does this by brewing at the proper temperatures; brewing for the proper length of time; and minimizing the use of extra components that can alter the taste of brewed coffee. If you use your Technivorm with a good coffee grinder (covered below) and freshly roasted quality coffee, your only concern will be that you now brew coffee better than that produced by the majority of restaurants and coffee shops in the world. That's a problem worth having.

  • Q: Why does the Technivorm CDGT include both the Travel and Brew Thru Lids?
A: The Travel Lid seals the carafe and provides the best temperature holding times. It can be opened slightly for pouring. The Brew Thru Lid is a recent addition from Technivorm that forces the entire batch of coffee to mix as it brews, so there are no "layers" of different tasting coffee.

  • Q: Does the Technivorm CDGT feature and auto-stopper for the coffee drip?
A: Yes, Coffee will not stop dripping from the filter basket if the carafe is removed; however, the heating element will shut down until the carafe is replaced if more water remains in the tank. Please understand that drip coffee from any coffee maker extracts more strongly at the beginning of brewing and weaker near the end. Pouring out one of the early cups of coffee will alter the flavor of the remaining brew.

  • Q: Can I brew a smaller pot of coffee instead of full?
A: Because of the auto-drip-stopper, brewing a half pot or less of coffee may be more difficult on this model. We would recommend the other CDGT-741 brewers if shorter batches will frequently be brewed.

  • Q: I noticed that some components are plastic. Are all the parts that touch water and coffee BPA-Free?
A: Yes, every part that touches either water or coffee is BPA-Free. The water tank is made from High Density plastic (same as airplane windows), and the brew basket and carafe lids are made from ABS plastic (same as car bumpers). Both of these plastics are naturally BPA-Free.

  • Q: Do I need to purchase a grinder with the Technivorm CDGT?
A: You need not buy a grinder, but it is highly recommended. If you want to buy a Technivorm coffee maker, you are already seeking the best pot of drip coffee that money can buy. Coffee beans already release their aromas over time, but once they have been ground, become stale in less than an hour. If you desire to enjoy the best pot of coffee, you should grind your beans immediately before brewing. It is critical to purchase a good grinder, such as a Baratza (click here). Lesser grinders either lack a full range of settings or deliver inconsistently sized particles such as dust, which negatively affect extraction.

  • Q: What grind is recommended for the Technivorm?
A: You should have your coffee ground in a setting between Auto-Drip and Drip, depending on the roast level of coffee used, another reason to purchase a good grinder. The speed of the brewing process can cause the brew basket to overflow if the grind is too fine. If you purchase pre-ground coffee from JL Hufford, choose Auto-Drip.

  • Q: What kind of filter should I use?
A: If you desire the richest possible cup, something akin to French Press, use a standard Gold Tone Filter. If you want a clean cup of coffee without sediment, you should use the non-chemical whitened filters such as the included Filtropa filters. Brown paper and chlorine-bleached paper filters are not recommended because they alter the taste of the coffee. We asked Technivorm about the ultra-high-priced gold filters, and they said that these tend to overflow due to the proper brewing speed provided by Technivorm coffee makers. Our own testing has confirmed this claim on certain roasts of coffee, such as the darker ones, and also those ground in the finer range of Auto-Drip.

  • Q: Does the Technivorm CDGT feature Auto-On and Auto-Off?
A: The CDGT employs a Dual Safety Shut-Off. When either the water tank is empty or the thermal carafe is not in the brewing position, the heating element is shut off (please note, the light on the switch remains illuminated). Technivorm coffee makers do not have clocks on them (just another part that can fail), so they do not have an Auto-On feature. Auto-On features are also inconsistent with the pursuit of the best coffee because brewed coffee should be consumed within 90 minutes of completion.
