- Q: Is the Vario-W the same as the Vario-E?
A: Yes. Sometime in between initial testing and launch, Baratza decided that "-W" was less confusing, since it is a Weight based grinder, and both Varios are still Electronic.
- Q: Is there a manual grind option with the Vario-W if I don't want to use a preset?
A: Yes and no. While not a "manual" button, if you use the arrows to adjust the weight on the LCD screen and press "Start," the Vario-W will grind that weight and then stop. This is not stored and does not affect your presets.
- Q: Is it really necessary to grind by weight?
A: Absolutely. As with cooking, if you want any kind of consistency, you need to measure your ingredients. Take, for example, a filter basket for espresso. When you fill it and level the coffee grounds, it's full, but how much coffee is really in there? Depending on the roast, density of the bean, and even the "clumpiness" of the grind, you could be off by several grams each time you fill it. 2 grams out of 14 is over 14% and that makes a huge difference. 0.2 grams of variance allowed by the Vario-W is 1.4% for a 14 gram double, and the world's best tasters would have difficulty discerning a difference.
- Q: Can the Baratza Vario-W be used in a commercial environment?
A: Baratza does not exclude the Vario-W from commercial use in its warranty, and all Baratza grinders are UL Std. 763-certified; however, the recommended daily use for the grinders is up to 2 pounds. This should be considered if your location has higher volume demands.
- Q: Can I use my espresso portafilter with the Vario-W?
A: No, the Vario-W must be used with its included ground coffee bin, which makes grinding less messy as well. Portafilters come in different shapes, sizes, and weights and would significantly alter the accuracy of the scale.
- Q: Can I use the Baratza PortaHolder with the Vario-W?
A: No, for the same reasons as above, the Vario-W can only be used with its fitted ground coffee bin.
- Q: Can the Baratza Vario-W be recalibrated as with the other Vario?
A: Yes, these Vario-Ws include the secondary calibration screw located behind the ground coffee discharge chute and a 2 mm Allen wrench to adjust it. These come pre-calibrated to the finest espresso grind you would need, but you can fine tune your Baratza Vario to a true zero point for Turkish or to a coarser home position if you will mainly brew with drip, percolator or French Press.
- Q: Can my existing Vario be upgraded to become a Vario-W?
A: We know of no plans from Baratza as of this date to offer upgrade kits, sorry.
